Design

Spazio Como's unique design is immediately striking. Winner of the Maestri Comacini 2009 prize for new construction, Spazio Como represents an original and creative solution to a very specific technical requirement.

To complete the hotel's exceptional offering, Grand Hotel di Como wanted a 300-seater conference hall which was as luminous as possible and open to the park, but without the disturbing effect of direct sunlight. The architect engaged for the project, Attilio Terragni, responded with innovative solutions picked up from his years with Daniel Libeskind.

The volume is intersected by linear surfaces arranged arbitrarily in space to produce a series of openings at various angles which minimize the glare of strong sunshine inside the room. In common with other celebrated works on which he worked with Libeskind (Museum of Berlin extension and Federation Square in Melbourne), the internal space presents a continual interweaving of structure and light, vertically and horizontally, regular and random. The glass outer shell takes on the blue and green of nature, reflecting the scenery by day and becoming transparent at night
